Designing a secondary or “basement” suite just got a lot easier. The City of Calgary has approved the Secondary Suite Development Permit exemption which eliminates the need for a Development Permit when people are looking to make their suite safe and legal. Essentially, if a property meets all the requirements of the Land Use Bylaw and has the proper zoning, the city will waive the Development Permit application.
With this move, secondary suites have become easier, faster and cheaper to build in Calgary. The City hopes that by simplifying the process, more suite owners will be encouraged to come forward and make their suites safe city.
